Despite having worked with leading Bollywood directors such as Rajkumar Hirani, Farhan Akhtar, and Mira Nair, Lakshmipriya chose a different path. Instead of making commercial cinema, she decided to tell a story connected to her homeland Manipur and highlight the emotional struggles faced by children growing up amid social unrest.
The film follows a young boy named Boong who begins a journey to search for his missing father. Through this emotional story, the director portrays the hopes, fears, and dreams of children affected by conflict. Made on a small budget with a limited crew, the movie was completed in just 38 days.
Before winning the BAFTA in 2026, Boong received appreciation at international film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival. The film has been widely praised for its realistic storytelling and honest performances by child actors.
Lakshmipriya Devi, who was born in Imphal, said the film reflects the aspirations of people in Manipur who hope for peace and a better future. The achievement has been congratulated by national leaders and film personalities, marking an important milestone for Indian regional cinema on the global stage.
