WhatsApp is one of the most used apps in India today. People use it daily for chatting, business communication, payments, and sharing information. But along with its popularity, cyber fraud and online scams have also increased. To improve digital safety, the government is discussing a new rule called the SIM binding rule for WhatsApp users.

Under the proposed rule, WhatsApp accounts may be directly linked to the SIM card inserted in your mobile phone. Currently, once you verify WhatsApp using OTP, you can remove the SIM and still continue using the app through internet access. The new rule may change this system.
If implemented, WhatsApp will work only when the registered SIM card is present in the phone. Removing the SIM or changing it may require re-verification. The goal is to stop fraudsters who misuse fake SIM cards or operate accounts anonymously.
The government believes this step can improve identity verification, reduce scams, and make digital communication safer. However, the SIM binding rule has not been officially implemented yet and is still under review.
Users are advised to keep their SIM active, avoid unknown SIM cards, and enable WhatsApp security features like two-step verification. As India moves toward stronger digital security, such measures may become common across many apps in the future.
