Total Vacancy: 959 PhD Seats The university has notified 959 seats across the listed departments, University campus and constituent colleges. Seat numbers can increase or decrease depending on supervisor availability and decisions of the competent authority.
Educational Qualification Master's Degree in the relevant subject with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade. A candidate with a four-year / eight-semester Bachelor's Degree may be eligible with at least 75% marks or equivalent grade. A relaxation of 5% marks may be allowed for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, Differently-Abled, EWS and other categories as permitted under applicable rules. The percentage of marks obtained is not rounded off to the next higher integer. Subject-wise eligibility must be checked in the official PhD Admission 2026 brochure.
Qualifying Examination Most applicants must qualify UGC/CSIR-NET for PhD admission. Applicants may also be considered through BET, DHR-BRET, NBHM Doctoral Scholarship or Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme where applicable. Valid GATE/JEST/ICAR scores are considered for Group-B applicants where applicable. For Group-B, UGC/CSIR-NET scores from December 2025 and June 2026 are valid for the 2026-27 session. The university may conduct a separate entrance examination or another permissible admission mechanism if NET is not conducted for a subject or no qualified applicant is available, subject to approval.
Selection / Admission Process Online PhD registration and application. Applicants are classified into Group A, Group B and Group C according to their qualifying credentials/exemption category. Group-A applicants include JRF and Assistant Professor qualified UGC/CSIR-NET or equivalent JRF candidates. Group-B applicants include Assistant Professor / PhD-only NET candidates and eligible GATE/JEST/ICAR candidates. Group-C covers exempted categories specified in the admission brochure. Group-B applicants are shortlisted up to two times the advertised seats, subject to reservation rules. Shortlisted candidates appear before the concerned Department/Centre/Institute for the Research Aptitude Test. The Research Aptitude Test may include interview, presentation, group discussion, written assessment or other appraisal methods. For non-exempted applicants, the qualifying examination score is converted to 70 marks and RAT carries 30 marks. Academic performance carries up to 20 marks, making the final merit methodology total 120 marks. Exempted-category selection is based on Research Aptitude Test performance as prescribed. Final merit and waiting lists are prepared department/unit-wise and sent for competent authority approval.

Intermediate / 10+2 marksheet and certificate. High School / 10th marksheet and certificate. Category certificate in the prescribed Central Government format, where applicable. PwBD certificate in the prescribed format, where applicable. Photo ID proof such as Aadhaar Card. Two recent passport-size photographs. NOC and experience certificates for applicable employed / part-time candidates. Research Proposal / Statement of Purpose where required by the concerned department.
How to Apply Online Visit the official University of Allahabad admission portal. Open the PhD Admission 2026-27 application section. Register using your name, mobile number and email ID. Login using the generated credentials. Select the PhD subject for which you are eligible. Enter personal, academic, category and qualifying examination details. Upload the required documents, photograph and other details as instructed. Pay the applicable registration fee online. Review all information carefully before final submission. Submit the application before 25 September 2026. Save the application form, payment receipt and registration details for future use.
Important Instructions The online registration period is from 02 September 2026 to 25 September 2026. Fee payment and final form submission must also be completed by 25 September 2026. Separate applications and prescribed fees are required for each additional subject. Check the subject-wise eligibility before selecting a PhD programme. Seat numbers are subject to supervisor availability and may increase or decrease during the admission process. The university may withdraw a subject from the admission process where permitted under the brochure. Admission remains provisional until eligibility, original documents and approval by the competent authority are completed. Candidates must produce original documents and self-attested copies at the Research Aptitude Test / verification stage as prescribed. University of Allahabad does not offer PhD programmes through distance or online mode; the online form refers to the admission application process.
